Nizhny Novgorod residents were reminded about the cancellation of cash payments in transport starting from July 1.
On June 23, 2026, 09:27 Society Starting July 1, cash payments will no longer be accepted on public transport in Nizhny Novgorod. The ability to hand money to the driver or conductor will be completely disabled, reports the Telegram channel "Nizhny Novgorod Transport."
Passengers will be able to pay for their ride using a bank card, a transport card, a virtual card on an Android smartphone, as well as a card for residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region. QR codes for payment are placed in the cabins, and a remote payment method is also available through the "Nizhny Novgorod Region. Transport" app.
Cash will not completely disappear; it will still be possible to top up the transport card with cash. This can be done at "Siticard" offices, Russian Post branches, and printing kiosks.
As previously noted by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways of the region, Denis Ryabinin, the refusal of cash will allow drivers to focus on passenger safety and reduce the number of conflicts in the cabin. According to him, currently, less than 2.8% of trips are paid for in cash, and this share continues to decrease.
Initially, the transition to cashless payments was planned for November 1, 2025. At that time, the fare for card payments increased from 35 to 40 rubles. Later, the deadlines were shifted to June 1, 2026, to make the transition more comfortable for residents. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
