The soils of Nizhny Novgorod have been classified as moderately hazardous in terms of heavy metal pollution as of the end of 2025, with a pollution index of Zф=28. This is stated in a review by Rosgidromet. Among the characteristic soil pollutants in the city are lead, zinc, and copper. For comparison, the soils of most other cities in the Volga Federal District fall into the permissible pollution category. Notably, Dzerzhinsk is highlighted: the soils on special purpose lands on Nauki Street have fallen into the "hazardous" category with an index of Zф=63. Among the pollutants are mercury, lead, and copper. It is worth noting that hazardous substances from the Stockholm Convention list have been found in the soils of Kstovo.
