Not treatment, but a chemical attack: Nizhny Novgorod residents were informed about the dangers of nettle.
June 14, 2026 12:44 Society The popular method of "treating" joints and strengthening immunity with nettle has no therapeutic effect and can be dangerous to health. This was reported by medical blogger Alexey Nikonov, citing the director of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the GNCDC of the Ministry of Health of Russia, dermatologist Tatyana Pavlova. According to the specialist, the widespread belief that a nettle burn improves blood circulation is a misconception. As Tatyana Pavlova explained, the stinging hairs of the plant act like micro-syringes, injecting a mixture of formic acid, histamine, and acetylcholine under the skin. The doctor noted that this reaction is not a therapeutic effect but a classic contact dermatitis. For most people, the consequences pass within a day; however, in children and individuals with allergies, contact with nettle can lead to severe complications. Among the possible consequences, the dermatologist mentioned generalized rash, pronounced swelling, and anaphylaxis—a life-threatening condition. In case of a nettle burn, the specialist recommends rinsing the affected area with cold running water, avoiding rubbing the skin, excluding exposure to heat, applying a cooling gel, such as aloe, and taking an antihistamine if prone to allergic reactions. If breathing difficulties or throat swelling occur, it is essential to call an ambulance immediately, emphasized Pavlova. Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents were explained why a drug for ulcerative colitis disappeared from pharmacies. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
