VTB survey: every fourth resident of the Volga Federal District does not know which services they can claim a tax deduction for.

      June 11, 2026 15:59 Economy Survey results* from VTB showed that 29% of residents in the Volga Federal District apply for a tax deduction annually, while 24% noted that they do not know which services qualify for a partial refund. At the same time, the demand for simplified digital services is growing—one-third of respondents are willing to trust banks to submit documents for tax deductions if they have such tools.

      According to the survey, 29% of Volga residents file for tax deductions annually. More than a third (36%) submit documents episodically—mainly after significant expenses, such as purchasing real estate or medical treatment. Meanwhile, 24% have never filed for a deduction but are considering the possibility.

      The most sought-after categories for deductions are medical treatment, with 45% of respondents having received refunds for these services through tax deductions. Another 42% of Volga residents filed for deductions when purchasing real estate (42%). This is followed by education (25%), investments (16%), sports (10%), and charity (2%).

      Interestingly, in the Volga Federal District, people more frequently plan to claim tax deductions for medical treatment (56%), while in the Northwestern and North Caucasian Federal Districts, it is for real estate (35% each). Residents of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region lead in interest in tax deductions for education (30%), the Urals for investments (23%), Moscow and the Moscow region for sports (17%), and the Far East for charity (14%).

      Among the key barriers to obtaining tax deductions, residents of the Volga Federal District cite a lack of information: 24% do not know which services qualify for deductions. Another 21% of respondents are not ready to file for deductions due to the small refund amount, 18% lack time to prepare documents, and 15% fear mistakes and rejections from tax authorities.

      The interest of residents in the Volga Federal District in digital solutions for submitting documents to receive tax deductions is growing. More than a third of respondents are willing to use banking services if it saves time, 19% if the service reminds them to submit documents, and another 9% if documents are pre-checked by specialists.
