A monument to the outstanding physicist has been unveiled in Nizhny Novgorod.
On June 9, 2026, a monument was erected in the square at the intersection of Ulyanova and Proviantskaya streets to the founder and first director of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, honorary citizen of Nizhny Novgorod, Andrei Gaponov-Grekhov. The solemn ceremony was timed to the 100th anniversary of the scientist's birth, which was celebrated on June 7. The initiative to immortalize the memory of the outstanding scientist and organizer of science belongs to the team of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPF RAS), which was named after the academician, Hero of Socialist Labor Andrei Gaponov-Grekhov in 2022. The monument is located next to the complex of buildings of the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The opening ceremony of the monument was attended by the first deputy governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Andrei Gneushev, the chief federal inspector for the region, Alexander Murzin, senator of the Federation Council Dmitry Krasnov, the head of the city Yuri Shalabaev, the scientific director of IPF RAS, academician Alexander Litvak, representatives of the institute's leadership and staff, the scientific community, the deputy corps, and relatives of the academician. "His name is forever inscribed in the history of domestic science and, of course, in the history of the Nizhny Novgorod region," said Andrei Gneushev. Among the participants of the event was the rector of Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University, honorary citizen of Nizhny Novgorod, Sergey Dmitriev. At various stages of his life, the fate of A.V. Gaponov-Grekhov was connected with the Nizhny Novgorod Polytechnic. In the mid-1950s, the young scientist worked at the Gorky Polytechnic Institute (now NGTU). He rose from lecturer to associate professor and professor, laying the foundations for training high-class physicists-researchers within the walls of the technical university. Cooperation continued in subsequent years. NGTU named after R.E. Alekseev and IPF RAS named after A.V. Gaponov-Grekhov are strategic partners: university scientists and academic institute researchers work together on projects in the fields of high-power electronics, plasma physics, and laser technologies. Speaking at the rally, the head of the city, Yuri Shalabaev, emphasized: "The monument that has appeared here is not just a tribute to the past. It is a symbol that Nizhny Novgorod has been, is, and will always be a forge of advanced ideas and breakthrough technologies. And the fact that the monument is erected in our city, which Gaponov-Grekhov glorified with his scientific works, is absolutely natural and fair. Let this monument serve as a reminder to the younger generation: science begins here, on our land, and greatness is made up of devotion to one's work and love for one's native city." As part of the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the academician's birth, a scientific session of the bureau of the Department of Physical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences was held at the IPF RAS named after A.V. Gaponov-Grekhov.
