The prospects for the development of dairy farming were discussed in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

On June 10, 2026, at 17:51, the current state and prospects for the development of dairy farming were discussed at a meeting of the operational headquarters for ensuring the sustainability of socio-economic development in the Nizhny Novgorod region, chaired by Governor Gleb Nikitin.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Yegor Polyakov, heads of relevant ministries, and representatives of dairy industry enterprises.

As noted by the participants of the meeting, dairy farming remains one of the key areas of the agro-industrial complex in the region. In terms of milk production volumes, the Nizhny Novgorod region ranks 11th in Russia. However, since the beginning of 2026, enterprises in the sector have faced a deterioration in financial indicators against the backdrop of rising production costs and a tight monetary policy.

According to Gleb Nikitin, the agro-industrial sector of the region maintains a positive trend based on the results of the first quarter of 2026. The volume of agricultural production amounted to 104.2% compared to the same period last year. However, the profitability of enterprises is declining.

"The cost of milk production has increased: labor costs, fuel expenses, and the maintenance of the enterprise itself. Agricultural machinery and spare parts have become more expensive, as have mineral fertilizers. We understand the complexity of the conditions in which dairy enterprises find themselves. Our task is to develop solutions that will allow us to maintain profitability and protect producers," emphasized the governor.

Acting Minister of Economic Development of the Nizhny Novgorod region Alexander Solovyov presented an analysis of the main indicators of the industry. According to him, the region continues to increase its level of self-sufficiency in milk. Production volumes are almost comparable to processing volumes, and the growth of indicators is ensured through the modernization of enterprises and state support measures.

He also reported that in 2025, 80% of dairy farming enterprises in the region received subsidies.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nikolai Denisov, stated that for the sustainable operation of farms, it is necessary not only to increase production efficiency but also to expand state support measures. According to him, one of the key tasks remains reducing the cost of feed, which accounts for about half of the enterprises' expenses, as well as developing export directions.

Following the meeting, a list of assignments was formed to improve the efficiency of the industry. In particular, the authorities will work on additional mechanisms for compensating costs for the purchase of agricultural machinery and fertilizers, issues related to the development of breeding work, and interaction between producers and retail chains.
