In the Nizhny Novgorod region, industries with the most acute labor shortages have been identified.
June 3, 2026 16:39 Economy NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" - Alexandra Turovskaya A low level of unemployment remains in the Nizhny Novgorod region, however, it cannot be claimed that there is an absolute balance in the job market at this time. This was stated by the director of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of hh.ru, Zhanna Petrunina, at the press conference "HR Code: Future, Technology, People, Creativity," which was attended by a correspondent from NIA "Nizhny Novgorod." The expert assures that the personnel reserve in the region is exhausted in many sectors, but there is a noticeable imbalance: in some areas, employers experience a severe shortage of specialists, while in others, there is a surplus of applicants. The "staff hunger" has been affecting sectors such as medicine or pharmaceuticals, as well as retail trade, for more than one year. As Zhanna Petrunina noted, these are areas with a large number of mass hiring vacancies. At the same time, the level of offered salaries in these sectors is often below the market average. The median salary in the Nizhny Novgorod region is almost 75,000 rubles. Meanwhile, this same figure in retail trade is about 58,000 rubles, which is approximately 17,000 rubles lower. According to the expert, the significant difference in earnings is one of the factors contributing to the ongoing personnel shortage. Retail trade finds it difficult to emerge from such a crisis situation because it is a low-margin business. For this reason, companies often cannot compete in terms of salary levels with employers from other sectors. By the way, this situation is observed not only in the Nizhny Novgorod region but also in most regions of the country. Meanwhile, in pharmaceuticals, the offered salary is also about five thousand rubles lower than the median. At the same time, the industry requires relevant education, high qualifications, expert knowledge, and developed communication skills, which significantly complicates personnel selection. In turn, a surplus of applicants is observed in marketing, advertising, PR, information technology, as well as in investment strategy and consulting sectors. However, this industry has its own problems, such as a lack of necessary competencies. According to hh.ru, 93% of employers report a skills shortage among candidates. Thus, despite the formal surplus of applicants, companies still find it difficult to find suitable specialists.
