Gleb Nikitin summarized the development of sports in the Nizhny Novgorod region for the year 2025.
In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the systematic development of the sports sector continues with an emphasis on accessibility for residents. Governor Gleb Nikitin reported on the results of the work in 2025 at a meeting of the Legislative Assembly on May 28. According to him, special attention is paid in the region to ensuring that sports are open to all categories of citizens. Almost 20 groups of the population have received the right to visit state and municipal sports institutions for free. Among them are large families, pensioners, veterans of the Special Military Operation (SMO), and their relatives.
More than 2,000 veterans of combat operations and participants of the SMO are already engaged in sports activities. They have been provided with free access to 119 sports facilities in the region. In addition, over 80% of sports facilities are fully or partially adapted for people with disabilities.
The government of the Nizhny Novgorod region actively promotes a healthy lifestyle among the population, paying special attention to the development of sports. A state program is being implemented in the region aimed at creating and modernizing sports infrastructure, which allows more than 63% of residents to systematically engage in physical culture and sports, noted Gleb Nikitin.
In 2025, the first specialized Boxing Center in the region began operations in Gorodets. Repairs were carried out on ice arenas in Zavolzhye and Bor, and dozens of modular ski bases and sports grounds were established. The quality of sports infrastructure is receiving recognition at the federal level. The ice arena at Strelka became the winner of the XIII annual all-Russian award "Sports Facilities" as the best facility among new and under-construction ice complexes.
The governor emphasized that the region is strengthening its reputation as a "territory for sports." In 2025, more than 1,300 official physical culture and sports events took place in the region, including international competitions and mass events such as "Cross of the Nation," X-WATERS Volga, and the Fijital Games 2025. Many major events have a social focus. In particular, the charity half-marathon "Run, Hero!" unites about 20,000 participants annually. Part of the registration fees is directed to support socially significant projects. In 2025, grant support was received for a project to develop inclusive sports for blind and sighted athletes.
The report also highlighted the achievements of professional Nizhny Novgorod athletes, who won nearly 5,000 medals in 2025. The governor also reminded that since 2025, a state program "Sport of Russia" has been implemented in Russia by order of President Vladimir Putin. It is aimed at developing sports infrastructure, conducting mass events, popularizing the "Ready for Labor and Defense" complex, as well as creating conditions for physical activity, including for children and veterans of the SMO, facilitating their resocialization through sports.
It was previously reported that the project for a new mini-football center "Torpedo" will be prepared by the end of 2026. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
