The new Nizhny Novgorod metro shield has been named Yevdokiya.
On May 27, 2026, at 11:16, Society A new tunnel boring shield has received a female name - "Eudokia." This initiative was supported by metro builders, continuing the tradition of underground builders to name their equipment after significant historical figures. The tradition of giving shields female names is associated with the veneration of the patroness of underground work, Saint Barbara, as reported by the MAX channel "MetroNN." The complex was purchased in China, and soon this shield will be the first to begin tunneling from the dead ends of the "Gorkovskaya" station towards Freedom Square. The name was chosen deliberately. The first Nizhny Novgorod shield is named after Saint Prince Vladimir - the baptizer of Rus. Therefore, for the next one, they decided to choose another significant historical figure associated with Nizhny Novgorod land. The choice fell on Grand Duchess Eudokia Dmitrievna, daughter of the Suzdal-Nizhny Novgorod Grand Prince Dmitry Konstantinovich and wife of Dmitry Donskoy. The marriage to Prince Dmitry Ivanovich ended the confrontation between the Moscow and Suzdal-Nizhny Novgorod principalities and became a symbol of their reconciliation. The couple lived together for 22 years and had 12 children. After the death of Dmitry Donskoy, she took monastic vows under the name Euphrosinia and entered history as the Venerable Euphrosinia of Moscow. A monument to the princess and her husband is installed in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. It was previously reported that a new payment method for travel has appeared in the Nizhny Novgorod metro.
