The engineering structures of the second technological phase of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station are being prepared for the start of reconstruction.

      The Joint Utility Operator JSC is completing technological activities to prepare for construction and installation works as part of the second stage of the reconstruction of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station. As of today, the activities have been completed by more than 95%, and they are being carried out without stopping the reception and treatment of wastewater from residents and enterprises of Nizhny Novgorod, Bor, and partially the Kstovo district. During the reconstruction, individual engineering structures of the second technological line will be phased out to maintain biological treatment of wastewater. A set of preparatory activities is being conducted for this purpose. In particular, a shield gate has been installed in the distribution chamber of the primary settlers, and an emergency overflow has been arranged on the aeration tanks. The repair and replacement of two shields on the sand traps are in the final stage. A bypass line is being constructed – a diversion section of the pipeline created parallel to the main line to redirect wastewater flows and ensure the uninterrupted operation of the aeration station. All preparatory work has been coordinated with the new contractor for the reconstruction, and it is planned to complete them within two weeks.

      Recall that after the competitive procedure, the Joint Utility Operator JSC signed a contract on May 12, 2026, for the reconstruction of the second stage of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station with the contracting organization LLC SoyuzDonStroy. In the coming years, it is planned to reconstruct and rebuild 61 structures, including two ultraviolet disinfection stations. Also, upon completion of the second stage, the technology for treating sludge will be completely changed, which will include two-stage dewatering and thermal drying. This will allow moving away from the outdated technology of placing sludge on special drying sites and subsequent disposal at the landfill. After the reconstruction of the treatment facilities is completed, it is planned to gradually reclaim the sludge fields and the landfill.

      For reference: The Nizhny Novgorod aeration station is the largest wastewater treatment facility in the Nizhny Novgorod region, with an average daily inflow of about 500 thousand cubic meters. For the first time since the station was built in 1974, a large-scale modernization is being carried out. The work started in 2022, is divided into stages, and is being conducted without stopping the reception of wastewater. The first stage of reconstruction has now been completed, which included 50 structures. In the summer of 2026, work will begin on the second stage of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station reconstruction, the project of which is under state expertise for the accuracy of the cost documentation.
