Nizhny Novgorod student saves a person by becoming a bone marrow donor.

May 26, 2026 14:15 Society Second-year social sciences student at Lobachevsky NNGU Dmitry Smirnov became a non-related donor for a man with a serious illness. This was reported by the university's press service. Last year, the young man joined the Federal Register. In March 2026, he was chosen as a donor. After a complete medical examination and the procedure, the Nizhny Novgorod resident became the first student in the region to share bone marrow. His act saved the life of a patient in urgent need of a transplant.

This is a completely selfless act. I believe that the desire to help people should be in each of us; it is absolutely natural. I really hope to someday meet the person I was able to help. I hope this meeting will happen in the future, Dmitry Smirnov said.

NNGU Rector Oleg Trofimov noted that the staff and students of the educational institution have been participating in events organized by the university together with the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Blood Center named after Klimova for 17 years. As a result, more than three thousand blood donation procedures have taken place. Additionally, 192 students have entered the bone marrow donor registry after educational events on HLA typing. NNGU's partner in this direction is the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. Earlier, we reported that an employee of Nizhny Novgorod Colony No. 12 saved a drowning girl.
