Members of the Public Chamber of Nizhny Novgorod held the international chess festival "Opening Cup 2026."

      The Deputy Chairman of the Public Chamber of Nizhny Novgorod, co-founder of the chess club "Otkrytie," Roman Permyakov, participated in organizing the international chess festival "Otkrytie Cup 2026," dedicated to the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia. This was reported by the city's Department of Social Communications and Youth Policy. At the opening ceremony, the Minister of Sports of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Dmitry Kabailo, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech. Over two days, the competitions took place at three venues. The Tournament of Unity of the Peoples of Russia was held at the House of National Unity, featuring representatives of various nationalities historically residing in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. On the same day, an international online tournament of Nizhny Novgorod's twin cities took place, with teams from Sukhumi and Bukhara participating. The climax of the festival was the final at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, where about 600 schoolchildren competed for the Cup of the Mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, and the number of spectators exceeded 2,000. The main guest of the festival was two-time world blitz champion, grandmaster Valentina Gunina, who held a simultaneous exhibition on 10 boards. As part of the festival, guests could also attend an educational marathon with lectures from leading chess experts in Russia and master classes. "In recent years, our region has implemented a program for the development of school chess, developed by our chess club, and this synergy has already yielded results: the number of schoolchildren engaged in chess has more than doubled in two years. Chess unites; it is a universal language understood all over the world," noted Roman Permyakov.

      The festival concluded with a solemn award ceremony attended by the Chairman of the Public Chamber of Nizhny Novgorod's Commission for Supporting Entrepreneurship and Developing Creative Industries, Arman Aslanyan.
