A new payment technology for subway travel has emerged in Russia.

      Sber, in partnership with the regional transport operator of the Nizhny Novgorod region "Sitikard," is launching the "Geopay" Sber2B service for metro fare payment. Residents and guests of Nizhny Novgorod now have a new payment method using the "Geopay" service, available at all Nizhny Novgorod metro stations since May 18. With the solution provided by the new Sber2B business group, passengers can pay for their trip without cash and without tapping a bank card to the terminal—just a smartphone with internet access is enough. A tripartite agreement to develop digital payment services in Nizhny Novgorod's transport was signed at the CIPR conference. Payment is made through the popular mapping service 2GIS, which acts as the technological partner of the project, in accordance with the approved regulated fare for a single trip. To use the service, passengers can choose any convenient method: build a route in the app, open the "Fare" menu, or go to their profile—payment with any bank card is available in each of these sections. After payment, the app will generate a QR code, which is valid until the end of the current day and can be used at any time. At the metro station turnstile, the phone screen with the QR code should be brought close to the reader on the side panel—a green arrow will light up on the display, and a green signal will appear on the turnstile for the passenger to pass through.

      Petr Dneprovskiy, director of the "Government Products and Services" division of Sberbank: "Starting from January 2025, Sber is developing a public transport payment technology based on geolocation—it has already been launched in 14 cities across the country and allows for easy payment for trips on buses, trams, and trolleybuses. Nizhny Novgorod has become the first city in Russia where we have adapted this technology for metro fare payment. Now passengers can use various payment methods—the new technology expands the choice and allows residents and guests of the city to pay for trips in a familiar app, saving time and planning expenses more conveniently. This is another step towards making the urban environment more convenient and technological for everyone."

      Leonid Lishnevetskiy, general director of Sber2B: "Paying for travel using the Sber2B service complements the existing payment methods, and passengers will always be able to choose the most comfortable option for passing through the turnstile. 'Geopay' Sber2B allows for a unified customer journey for passengers when paying for public transport in their home or guest region— in a familiar digital format, without unnecessary actions and switching between services. The project has been implemented in partnership with participants in the region's transport ecosystem and lays the foundation for further scaling of digital payments on other types of urban transport."
