Dermatologist Pavlova explained why beer cannot replace SPF cream.

On May 10, 2026, 14:41 Society A claim is actively spreading on social networks that beer can supposedly replace SPF cream and protect the skin from sunburn. However, specialists warn that such advice should not be trusted, writes medical blogger Alexey Nikonov on his MAX channel. According to the director of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the GNCDC of the Ministry of Health of Russia, dermatologist Tatiana Pavlova, such statements are a clear example of how scientific data turns into clickbait myths. "Scientists are indeed studying the components of brewing (especially hops and barley) for skin protection, but research is conducted on extracts, not on the drink itself," noted the specialist.

Hops contain xanthohumol and isoxanthohumol. Studies have shown that these substances have pronounced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They can neutralize free radicals that arise under the influence of ultraviolet light. There is also ferulic acid in the by-products of brewing, which can absorb UV rays and is even used in cosmetics. Nevertheless, beer itself does not possess such protective properties. Moreover, alcohol and sugars can cause irritation and increase sensitivity to the sun. Additionally, alcohol consumption reduces attentiveness, which only increases the risk of getting burned. Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents were informed about the harm of beer hair masks. The NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
