More than three thousand drivers were caught drunk behind the wheel in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      Since the beginning of 2026, 3,311 drivers in the Nizhny Novgorod region have been caught driving under the influence of alcohol. This was reported by the Nizhny Novgorod State Traffic Inspectorate. The state of intoxication was established in 2,198 drivers. Another 1,287 drivers refused to undergo medical examination. 393 drivers turned out to be repeat offenders. They had previously been deprived of their driving licenses for drunk driving and got behind the wheel again while intoxicated. They now face criminal liability. Driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as refusing to undergo a medical examination, is punishable by a fine of 45,000 rubles and deprivation of driving rights for a period of 1.5 to 2 years. Those who repeatedly drive drunk face criminal liability under Article 264.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the maximum punishment for which is imprisonment with confiscation of the vehicle.
