The Week of the Samaritan

      Today, on the Sunday of the Samaritan, three Divine Liturgies were celebrated at the Seraphimo-Diveevsky Monastery: the early one in the Transfiguration Cathedral and two later ones in the Trinity Cathedral and the Assumption Church. The Gospel passage read on the fifth Sunday after Easter tells of the Savior's conversation with a Samaritan woman, which changed her life. Her name has been preserved in church tradition – Photina. After her conversation with the Savior, she became a Christian, subsequently leading many people to God and accepting a martyr's death for her faith. And this is not just a memory of a conversation at the well, but a remembrance of a spiritual transformation, after which a person becomes a witness of Christ to others. The Gospel story of the Samaritan woman reminds us that the path to faith can begin with the most ordinary conversation and lead to a profound inner change. Christ speaks to the woman about living water, that is, about a grace that quenches not physical thirst, but the inner thirst of the human soul.
