What the Victory Parade in Nizhny Novgorod was like in different years: photos
May 9, 2026 09:00 Society One of the main associations with the great day of May 9 is the Victory Parade. A grand procession of military equipment, priceless emotions of veterans, precise movements of the marchers... The editorial team of NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has gathered an archival collection of Victory Parades, recalling the emotions that this day brings us year after year.

In addition to the traditional procession in Minin and Pozharsky Square, which involved more than two thousand people, Nizhny Novgorod residents could observe an air show featuring aerobatic figures performed by MiG-29 fighters, jet aircraft, and Il-76, while the water part of the event showcased 24 units of equipment.

Photo: Alexander Volozhanin Two years ago, the celebration of this important date was slightly overshadowed by the weather, which led to partial changes in the day's program; however, the main event went according to plan. The ceremonial part took place once again in Minin and Pozharsky Square, from where the residents of Gorky went to the front. The parade in 2024 was different from previous ones — for the first time, multi-purpose armored vehicles "Buran" and "Kadet," produced by Nizhny Novgorod's "OboronAvto," were presented.

One of the innovations that year was the participation of cavalry, specifically riders from the Cossack club "Stanitsa Volnaya," and special-purpose armored vehicles "Spartak" from the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant. At that time, Governor Gleb Nikitin noted that a record number of people participated in the event, and the parade itself became international — cadets from Belarus attended the celebration.
May 9, 2022. Photo: Kirill Martynov The 77th anniversary of victory may be remembered for the cloudiest and most unfavorable weather. Nevertheless, the elements could not overshadow the celebration of this day: one could still see foot and mechanized columns with historical and modern equipment, a large-scale air show, and a measured passage of vessels on the Volga. The difference in the 2022 parade was that for the first time in three years, spectators were present at the event.
May 9, 2021. Photo: Alexander Volozhanin The Victory Parade in 2021, according to Gleb Nikitin, became the largest in the history of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Approximately 1,300 people and about 90 units of equipment participated in it. That same year, during the main part of the celebration, samples of the latest experimental military equipment from TsNIIMash "Burevestnik" were presented for the first time, and the parade concluded with the flight of the supersonic strategic bomber Tu-160 "Valery Chkalov."
June 22, 2020. Photo: Kirill Martynov The unique year of 2020 moved the May 9 celebration to an online and self-isolation mode. Due to the pandemic, Vladimir Putin decided to postpone the parade to June 24 — the day in 1945 when the first festive march took place in Moscow. More than 700 servicemen and 75 units of military equipment passed along the Nizhnevolzhskaya Embankment, and there were no spectators at the event.
