Nizhny Novgorod surgeons saved the arm of a soldier from the special military operation, mutilated by a mine explosion, for 7 hours.
A 38-year-old man in the Nizhny Novgorod region was helped to cope with the severe consequences of a mine-explosive injury sustained during the Special Military Operation (SMO). His left arm was severely damaged: the wrist and forearm were deformed, with numerous shrapnel injuries affecting nerves, bones, and soft tissues. This was reported by the press service of the PIMU University Clinic.
Doctors had to close a large wound measuring approximately 10 by 25 centimeters while preserving the ability to use the arm in the future, restoring the function of tendons and nerves. The operation, which lasted about seven hours, was performed by a team from the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics at the PIMU University Clinic. The surgeons assembled the bones of the forearm into a single structure and stabilized the arm with pins in a position conducive to further recovery. This allowed for the stabilization of the limb and created a foundation for subsequent stages of treatment.
To close the soft tissue defects, specialists used a reconstructive surgery technique: they took a skin flap from the patient's thigh and transplanted it, connecting the blood vessels under a microscope. This method is considered one of the most complex types of microsurgery.
Traumatologist-orthopedist Oleg Nosov reported that the transplanted flap is viable, blood supply has been restored, and a reliable soft tissue framework has been created. The patient will undergo the next stages of reconstruction: working on the tendons and nerves to restore movement and sensitivity in the forearm and wrist.
