Nizhny Novgorod doctors performed the first liver transplant on a patient with cirrhosis.

      On May 2, 2026, at the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, the first liver transplant was performed. The operation took place on April 12, lasted about five hours, and was successful.

      The patient was a 49-year-old woman with liver cirrhosis. After the intervention, she was discharged from the hospital and is currently under regular medical supervision.

      The regional health ministry reported that the development of transplant assistance in the area continues with the support of specialists from the National Medical Research Center for Transplantology and Artificial Organs named after Academician V.I. Shumakov.

      Acting Director of the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, Sergey Gamayunov, stated that the patient had been suffering from cirrhosis since 2019. As the disease progressed, her condition worsened, requiring hospitalizations and intensive therapy, which provided only temporary relief. At the end of 2025, the woman was placed on the waiting list, and by March, the opportunity for a transplant arose.

      According to the doctors, the transplanted liver is functioning normally, and the patient's condition is assessed as satisfactory. If her recovery proceeds without complications, she will be able to return to her normal life.

      The operation was performed by a team of four surgeons: Vladimir Zagaynin, Denis Kuchin, Alexey Moiseev, and Sergey Gamayunov. Anesthesiologists, operating room nurses, gastroenterologists, diagnostic service specialists, and other hospital staff participated in the preparation, conduct of the intervention, and postoperative support.

      Currently, the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, together with the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary, is participating in the implementation of the flagship regional project "City of Health," launched at the suggestion of the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin.

      Organ transplantation is one of the most complex and technologically advanced types of medical assistance. Efforts to expand its availability in the region are being carried out within the framework of the national project "Sustained and Active Life."

      It was previously reported that the first kidney transplant at the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital was performed in November 2025, successfully operating on an 18-year-old patient with a congenital pathology. The second patient was a 36-year-old woman suffering from a congenital kidney development anomaly. She underwent transplantation in January. In March, a 36-year-old man was operated on.
