Mushroom picking through "Gosuslugi": who will need to obtain a permit?
May 1, 2026 08:00 Society Starting from September 1, 2027, the procedure for obtaining permits for the collection of certain types of mushrooms in Russia will change. This procedure can now be completed through the "Gosuslugi" portal. Mycologist Nikita Komissarov, a candidate of biological sciences and an employee of Lomonosov Moscow State University, explained in an interview with 360.ru that the innovation only applies to mushrooms listed in the Red Book. These are rare and endangered species, the collection of which is strictly regulated or prohibited. For certain cases, such as scientific research, conservation and restoration of populations on private lands, artificial breeding in special institutions with subsequent return to the natural environment, and construction of federal and regional significance facilities (for example, when laying a heat pipeline or gas pipeline through a forest inhabited by rare protected species), the collection of such mushrooms is possible, but a special permit will be required, which can be obtained through the state service. This will help avoid confusion and ensure the legality of activities. However, "quiet hunting" for personal needs, such as cooking or harvesting, still does not require permits and is not taxed, according to the Forest Code of Russia. It is important to remember that mushroom picking is prohibited in specially protected natural areas, such as reserves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries. During periods of special fire safety regimes or emergencies, authorities may impose a complete ban on staying in forests. Violating these rules may result in fines. Before going to the forest, it is recommended to familiarize oneself with the legislation and rules of the specific region, as additional restrictions may apply. For instance, the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod Region includes 55 species of mushrooms. The collection of these species is subject to an administrative fine of 2,500 to 5,000 rubles. In our region, one can collect without a permit everything that is not a red-listed species — familiar morels, porcini mushrooms, birch boletes, aspen mushrooms, honey mushrooms, butter mushrooms, saffron milk caps, oyster mushrooms, champignons, chanterelles (except for gray ones), etc. When collecting mushrooms, it is important to exercise caution and not confuse edible species with poisonous ones. It is also not recommended to collect mushrooms in contaminated areas, such as road sides or industrial zones. Using mushroom identification apps and saving photos of edible species in a gallery will help avoid mistakes. Let us remind you that 30 new species of plants and mushrooms have been added to the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
