Nizhny Novgorod dacha owners have been warned about prohibited plants on their plots.

On April 26, 2026, at 12:45, Society. Residents of Nizhny Novgorod were informed about which plants from the federal list of prohibited species may be found in garden plots in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

As biologists Olga Biryukova and Anna Shestakova from Lobachevsky University clarified in a conversation with the publication "Living in Nizhny," the list includes 19 species. Among them are opium poppy, sage of the seers, three-colored morning glory, hemp, some cacti with mescaline, and other plants.

According to specialists, in our region, three-colored morning glory has most often been grown for decorative purposes. This is a popular climbing annual vine native to the tropics. However, its seeds contain ergine—a toxic substance with pronounced hallucinogenic effects.

Other plants from the list are not specifically cultivated in the region. However, they may appear on a plot accidentally— for example, if seeds are carried by the wind. At the same time, the responsibility for the presence of such plants falls on the landowner.

Lawyer Irina Pitunova noted that even if a gardener did not plant a prohibited plant and it grew on its own, they could face an administrative fine ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 rubles.

In the case of intentional cultivation, the responsibility is significantly stricter—up to two years of imprisonment under Article 231 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Illegal cultivation of plants containing narcotic substances or psychotropic substances or their precursors"). The court may recognize ten plants as a large quantity for morning glory.

It was previously reported that a list of plants for destruction had been prepared in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
