Another 48 mm of precipitation is expected in Nizhny Novgorod by May.

      April 22, 2026 16:42 Society Since the beginning of the month, Nizhny Novgorod has recorded 231% of the climate norm for precipitation. With an average April figure of 41 mm, by April 21, 95 mm of rain and snow had already fallen, according to the city administration.

      According to meteorologists' forecasts, prolonged rains are expected starting April 23, which may continue until early May. Preliminary estimates suggest about 48 mm of precipitation, which will again exceed average values.

      Against the backdrop of an unfavorable forecast, city services have proactively intensified preparations for the prolonged rainy period. Work is organized around the clock, with special attention given to preventing flooding and ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow.

      Deputy Head of the Nizhny Novgorod Administration Anton Maximov reported that due to the active melting of snow and expected precipitation, water pumping equipment has been deployed in the affected areas. The equipment is directed to the most problematic sites in all districts. Since April 20, specialists have already pumped out more than 10,000 cubic meters of water, which is considered a significant volume for such a short period.

      After heavy snowfall, the sudden warming accelerated melting, increasing the load on the utility infrastructure.

      To prevent flooding, all available equipment is being used — vacuum trucks, vacuum machines, and motor pumps. Work is primarily being conducted on highways with heavy traffic, followed by yards and secondary roads. At the same time, stormwater drains and drainage channels are being cleared, and daily monitoring of slopes where landslides may occur is being conducted.

      Requests for water pumping are accepted through district administrations and a unified dispatch service.
