      On April 21, 2026, at 10:47, Society A young boy from Nizhny Novgorod underwent therapy with a domestic drug for growth stimulation for the first time in Russia due to a rare orphan disease. This was reported by Alexey Nikонов, the editor-in-chief of the medical publication "Statsionar-Press," on his Max channel. According to him, the child has Morquio syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis IVA) — a genetic condition in which children typically stop growing by the age of 6-7 years. The drug was prescribed as a result of the joint efforts of doctors from the B.V. Petrovsky Research Center for Surgery and Sechenov University. For the first time in Russian practice, the patient began a course of the domestic growth hormone — somatropin. Medical professionals had previously warned that there is currently insufficient experience in the country regarding the use of this drug for patients with such a diagnosis. Nevertheless, the therapy yielded results. "Before starting the course, his height was 98.5 centimeters, and now it is already 106. In two years, my son has grown by 7.5 centimeters. The doctors say this is a significant progress because, with our diagnosis, children at this age usually do not grow," the child's mother said. The boy is currently undergoing examinations at federal clinics twice a year. Specialists note that the results achieved may represent an important step in helping other Russian families raising children with similar rare diseases.
