The equipment is intended for the regional Nuclear Medicine Center being established, which will be part of the "City of Health" project. This was reported by Governor Gleb Nikitin on his Max channel. According to him, the combination of modern diagnostic methods will allow for a more effective assessment of patients' conditions. "Each of the acquired PET/CT units will conduct up to six thousand studies annually. With such capacities, there will be no queues for Nizhny Novgorod residents. Moreover, according to estimates from the Ministry of Health of Russia, Nizhny Novgorod will be able to additionally accept several thousand 'medical tourists' from several other regions of the Volga Federal District," noted Gleb Nikitin. The head of the region also added that the new SPECT/CT system will be an addition to the one already available at the regional oncology dispensary. Currently, similar equipment is used only for oncology patients, and after the new unit is introduced, other categories of patients will also be able to undergo examinations. The governor pointed out that this concerns so-called "heavy" equipment. Before its launch, specialized protected rooms need to be built, and a number of strict requirements must be met. For PET/CT, a cyclotron will also need to be installed for the production of radiopharmaceuticals. All these processes require time. Gleb Nikitin emphasized that the Nuclear Medicine Center is a key, but not the only component of the flagship project "City of Health." "As part of the national project 'Long and Active Life,' we also plan to construct a new surgical building with a clinic for the oncology center. In addition, in the coming years, we will undertake a comprehensive major renovation of the N.A. Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital. Increasing the accessibility of high-tech medical care is one of the goals of the People's Program of United Russia," he added. It is worth noting that the competition for the supply of systems was announced in March. The initial cost of contracts for the supply of SPECT/CT was 72 million rubles, and for two PET/CT machines, it was 357.5 million rubles. The contracts also provide for training specialists to work with the new equipment. The SPECT/CT system is expected to be delivered and put into operation by the end of the year, while the two PET/CT units are scheduled for 2028. In December 2025, a contract was signed for design and survey work for the construction of the Radiopharmaceutical Diagnosis and Therapy Center (PET-CT center). The contractor must complete this work no later than December 22, 2026.
