VTB: a third of Russians will save in deposits in the next 3-5 years
Despite the steady easing of monetary policy, deposits will maintain their status as the primary savings tool for a significant portion of the population. According to a VTB survey, one-third of Russians still believe that saving in deposits will be more profitable in the next 3-5 years. Currently, deposits continue to dominate the savings structure: one-third of Russians keep their funds only in deposits, while another third have invested less than 25% of their savings. Only 5% of respondents actively invest more than half of their savings. At the same time, 46% are interested in shares of Russian companies, 30% in bonds, 24% in mutual funds and trust management, and 17% in individual investment accounts. The lower the deposit rate falls, the more interest retail investors show in alternative instruments. With a deposit yield of 13%, 14% of respondents are considering switching. When it drops to 10-12%, another quarter joins them, and at rates of 7-9%, one-third of Russians will start looking for ways to increase their capital. Only 12% will not change their savings strategy under any circumstances.
The main criterion for choosing investment products for most Russians is reliability and the guarantee of capital preservation. For 19%, simplicity is important, and for another 19%, liquidity. For 17%, the main motivation is the potential for income exceeding that of deposits. The main advantage of investments for 52% of survey participants is the opportunity for monthly coupon income, for 25% it is protection against inflation, and for 12% it is tax benefits. 38% of Russians are ready to open an investment account right now if the bank offers a simple ready-made portfolio. 25% will be motivated by the example of acquaintances who earn more than from deposits. 10% will respond to advertising with a capital protection guarantee.
