How the snowy winter affected winter crops in the Nizhny Novgorod region
April 6, 2026 15:46 Society In the Nizhny Novgorod region, winter crops have generally survived the temperature swings and heavy snowfall this winter. No crop losses have been recorded. This was reported to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" by the regional Ministry of Agriculture. For the 2026 harvest, 238 thousand hectares of winter crops have been sown in the region. Of these, 221.7 thousand hectares are occupied by grains and forage crops, while another 16.3 thousand hectares are winter rapeseed. According to a survey conducted by specialists from the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Upper Volga Hydrometeorological Center," most of the crops are in good and satisfactory condition. To ensure a good harvest of winter crops and maintain them in optimal condition, farmers plan to carry out early fertilization with nitrogen fertilizers and harrowing. The ministry also clarified that in the event of crop losses, re-sowing with spring crops is planned. The regional insurance fund has 7 thousand tons of seeds, which is sufficient for re-sowing about 32 thousand hectares. It was previously reported that the area of agricultural land in the Nizhny Novgorod region will exceed 1 million hectares in 2026. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
