Doctors explained what "April fatigue" is and why it occurs.
April 3, 2026 11:35 SocietyApril fatigue is not a myth or a sign of laziness, but a very real state of the body that can affect many people in spring. It is a temporary phenomenon that usually lasts two to three weeks and is associated with the body's adjustment after winter. During this period, a person may experience increased fatigue, drowsiness, and a decrease in overall tone.
Why does April fatigue occur?
Neurologist, psychotherapist, addiction specialist, and candidate of medical sciences Lyudmila Kokotkina told 360.ru that April fatigue is related to the body's transition from winter mode to spring. The sun begins to shine brighter, temperatures rise, snow melts, but the biorhythms and hormonal background have not yet adapted to the changes. A lack of sunlight in winter leads to a deficiency of vitamin D, and the increase in daylight in spring requires greater activity, which can cause fatigue.
How to distinguish April fatigue from depression?
April fatigue passes after rest, sleep, or a walk; a person can find pleasure in small things. "A person may feel refreshed after the weekend, a good night's sleep, or a walk — they feel better. Also, with April fatigue, there is joy in small things: delicious food, warm sunshine outside. Moreover, a person can force themselves to do things, even if with difficulty, and feel satisfaction afterward," explained clinical psychologist and educational psychologist Anton Korovin.
Depression manifests as constant fatigue — a person wakes up already exhausted, loses interest in activities, and is prone to thoughts about the meaninglessness of life. If such symptoms persist for several weeks, it is necessary to consult a psychiatrist.
Spring exacerbation: myth or reality?
With the arrival of warmth, some people experience heightened perceptions of the world. This can lead to impulsive decisions, quarrels, and even psychosis. Such fluctuations are considered normal.
Causes of spring changes:
- Dopamine surge: An increase in daylight stimulates dopamine production, causing a desire for novelty and risk.
- Decreased serotonin: Control over impulses decreases due to hormonal adjustments.
- Hormonal changes: Testosterone increases in men, while women experience fluctuations in estrogen and cortisol, making emotional reactions sharper.
- Effect of new opportunities: The brain switches to change mode, which can lead to spontaneous decisions.
Spring excitement: how to cope with pressure and maintain harmony
Clinical psychologist and educational psychologist Anton Korovin noted that with the arrival of spring, many feel a surge of energy and activity, but this can be accompanied by societal pressure and social expectations. Psychologist Korovin emphasizes that normal spring emotions do not disrupt life: a person later realizes their impulses, and their sleep, appetite, and psycho-emotional state remain normal.
If you notice the following signs in yourself or loved ones, it may be a signal to consult a specialist:
- Impulsive decisions with negative consequences;
- Sleep and appetite disturbances;
- Psychopathic symptoms.
Instead of fighting against activity, the psychologist advises preparing for spontaneous decisions: for example, if you want to quit your job, take a vacation and revisit the issue later. The dopamine surge can be directed towards sports or creativity.
Doctor Kokotkina recommends establishing a sleep routine, resting at night for at least 7-9 hours. This will help restore the nervous system's function and cope with fatigue. Frequent walks in the fresh air will saturate the cells with oxygen and provide the body with a dose of sunlight, which is especially important after a long winter.
It is also important to monitor nutrition: consume vitamin D3, eat more greens, fresh vegetables, and drink enough water. Light physical activity, such as morning exercises, will help awaken the body and recharge with energy.
Psychologically, it is important to lighten your load: lower your standards, do not plan too many tasks. Do not refuse quick carbohydrates and rush to lose weight for summer. Give your body time to recover after winter.
Reducing information noise will help maintain balance: turn off notifications and avoid news before bedtime.
Remember that everything is fine with you, specialists emphasized.
