Up to 90% of Nizhny Novgorod residents are infected with the human papillomavirus.
March 30, 2026 14:14 Society Up to 90% of residents of Nizhny Novgorod become infected with the human papillomavirus during their lifetime. This was reported by the highest category oncologist, scientific secretary of the Research Institute of Clinical Oncology, Svyatoslav Zinovyev, to IA "NTA-Privolzhye." According to him, this figure corresponds to the national average. At the same time, the specialist emphasized that in the overwhelming majority of cases (about 90% of those infected), the body copes with the virus on its own. Infection with the human papillomavirus usually occurs without any symptoms. The infection can only be detected through PCR testing; however, mass screening of the population for HPV is not conducted. The human papillomavirus poses a serious threat as it can cause both benign tumors and oncological diseases. In particular, high-risk types of HPV, primarily 16 and 18, are responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer. Last autumn, the first HPV vaccine production in Russia was launched in the Kirov region. After reaching the necessary production volumes, it is planned to include the vaccine in the National Immunization Calendar.
