Scientists from NNGU have patented an AI application for assessing the biological age of the brain.
In Nizhny Novgorod, scientists from N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University have patented a system that uses artificial intelligence to determine a person's cognitive biological age and assess the condition of their brain. The online platform and mobile application "Cognitive Biological Age Calculator" allow users to complete a series of short tests in just a few minutes and receive an objective assessment of the aging speed of neural functions. The development is already being implemented in the practice of healthy longevity medicine and preventive clinics.
The online service and mobile application are available on the open platform of N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University for personal computers, as well as for Android devices in the RuStore. The system helps identify the first signs of cognitive impairments and assess the risk of developing age-related brain diseases. According to the developers, the accuracy of the model is comparable to methods based on MRI and EEG, and the user only needs a computer with a mouse or a smartphone.
The development was created by a team from the Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and the Institute of Biology of Aging at N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University. The scientists received a patent for the invention "Method for Determining a Person's Cognitive Age Using Artificial Intelligence," securing rights to the unique methodology. The results of their work were published in the journal NPJ Aging, one of the leading international publications on aging and age-associated diseases.
According to the head of the research, director of the Institute of Biology of Aging at N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University, Mikhail Ivanchenko, the first "Cognitive Clock" was launched in test mode on the university's open platform back in 2024. It is now a fully functional system with a serious evidence base and registered intellectual property. The tool allows anyone interested to complete a series of tests in approximately 15–20 minutes and receive a detailed interpretation of their cognitive functions, bringing personalized prevention of neurodegenerative disorders closer.
The service is based on the machine learning model Cognitive-Age-V, trained on data from over 1,800 people aged 20 to 85. The algorithm integrates the results of five short tests that assess memory, attention, logical thinking, reaction speed, and color perception. The greatest contribution to the assessment of cognitive age comes from color discrimination tests (campimetry) and the Stroop test, which reflect cognitive control and color perception accuracy.
Research has shown that cognitive age can significantly differ from chronological age. In patients with dementia, the system recorded accelerated brain aging averaging 15.4 years, while in people with moderate cognitive impairments, it was 7.6 years compared to their chronological age. Such deviations may be associated not only with natural aging but also with the consequences of diabetes, depression, sleep disorders, and other conditions affecting the nervous system.
Thanks to the application of explainable artificial intelligence technology (SHAP analysis), the system shows which specific indicators—reaction speed, attention stability, color recognition accuracy, or other parameters—had the most significant impact on the acceleration or deceleration of a specific user's cognitive aging. This allows doctors and users themselves to better understand which functions require attention and targeted training.
The service is already being used in the healthy longevity medicine programs of the state corporation "Rosatom" and the Federal Medical-Biological Agency, as well as in several preventive medicine clinics. The platform is available online on the N.N. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University website and as an Android application in RuStore for anyone interested. The project is implemented as part of the federal project "Artificial Intelligence" with the support of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia.
