Since the beginning of 2026, an updated procedure for providing medical care in the field of obstetrics and gynecology has come into effect in Russia. This was reported by Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of MIA "Stacionar-press."
The document, approved by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, establishes new requirements for the monitoring of pregnant women from Nizhny Novgorod.
According to the innovations, registration for pregnancy care must take place within two weeks after the first visit to a doctor at an early gestational age — between the 4th and 7th weeks. If a woman seeks care at later stages, the medical organization is required to register her within 7 days.
Mandatory visits to a medical psychologist are also being introduced — at least twice during the entire pregnancy. This is aimed at providing additional emotional and psychological support to expectant mothers.
Women's clinics will now provide preventive medical surveillance (dispensary care) for women of reproductive age. As part of these activities, general and reproductive health will be assessed. In addition, patient schools will begin operating within the clinics, where women and families can receive information and assistance in planning a pregnancy.
If a woman is considering terminating a pregnancy, she will be offered an ultrasound examination with a display of the embryo's image and an opportunity to listen to the heartbeat. Pre-abortion counseling will be provided by a qualified psychologist or a specially trained medical professional.
One of the key innovations is the introduction of non-invasive prenatal testing. This method allows chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus to be identified from cell-free DNA extracted from the mother's blood. The testing is safe and can be performed in early pregnancy.
It is noted that the new measures are aimed at improving the quality of medical care for pregnant women and strengthening preventive work in the field of reproductive health protection.
Earlier it was reported that the Nizhny Novgorod authorities would fulfill the wishes of Nizhny Novgorod women who decide to continue their pregnancies.
It is also recalled that one in four women in the Nizhny Novgorod region refuse abortion in favor of motherhood.
