The moose hunt in the Nizhny Novgorod region ended on January 11, 2026, the regional Ministry of Forestry reported.

According to the department's monitoring studies, the number of moose in the region is steadily increasing. For example, in 2023 there were about 22.2 thousand animals, while the following year this figure rose to 25.1 thousand. The most recent counts show an increase to nearly 25.6 thousand individuals.

Each year authorities set strict rules regarding hunting seasons and the permitted number of animals to be taken, based on population monitoring. In the past season, a maximum of 2,077 animals were allowed to be taken, which is 178 more than in the previous year, thanks to the noticeable increase in the number of animals.

To maintain sustainable population growth, special biological measures are regularly carried out, including the placement of salt licks for supplementary feeding. These measures help maintain moose health, promoting healthy reproduction and improving body condition.

Furthermore, violation of the hunting law carries serious consequences. Illegal killing of a moose is punishable under Article 258 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and requires compensation for damage to wildlife resources in the amount of 240,000 to 400,000 rubles for each animal. Just last year, more than 920 cases of violations of environmental legislation were recorded, of which 27 were cases of illegal hunting, resulting in the confiscation of 30 firearms.

If wild animals are found near residential areas, it is recommended to immediately contact the emergency service at 112 or the 24-hour "Green Telephone" service at 8(831)433-22-11.

Earlier it was reported that authorities allowed the culling of foxes in the Vorotynsky district.
