In Nizhny Novgorod, an operational headquarters has been formed in connection with an expected anomalous snowfall that, according to meteorologists’ forecasts, will begin as early as January 7. As the city’s mayor, Yuri Shalabaev, wrote on his Telegram channel, more than 40 centimeters of snow may fall over three days — almost the monthly norm for January.
The mayor emphasized that because of continuous precipitation the cleared streets are quickly covered with snow again, so the same sections have to be cleared several times. A truly noticeable effect from the road crews’ work will appear only after the intensity of the precipitation decreases.
“You can’t immediately remove all the snow of such volume from the roads, but the task is to eliminate the consequences in the shortest possible time for a situation like this. Equipment will first work on the main thoroughfares where public transport runs, then move to secondary roads; housing maintenance companies (DUKs) and homeowners’ associations (HOAs) should monitor courtyard areas. The Administrative and Technical Inspection is also switching to a special mode of operation,” Shalabaev noted.
Earlier, the Federal State Budgetary Institution ‘Upper Volga UGMS’ warned Nizhny Novgorod residents about a heavy snowfall that will begin on the afternoon of January 7 and may continue into the night of January 8. Intense precipitation is expected both in the regional center and in some districts of the region.
