      As of January 1, a seasonal ban on hunting the brown bear has been introduced in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The restriction will be in effect until March 21. This was reported by the press service of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. After that, hunting bears will be allowed from March 21 to June 10, and then from August 1 to December 31, the regional Ministry of Forestry reported. The agency reminded that in the winter period female bears are in dens and nurse their cubs. Human interference at this time is dangerous for the animals — the cubs are entirely dependent on their mother. Any hunting now is considered illegal and entails criminal liability. For killing a male one will have to pay a fine of 180,000 rubles, and for a female — 300,000.

      The brown bear population in the region is growing: according to the results of the latest monitoring, their number has reached 1,521 individuals. Most animals live in the Varnavinsky, Voskresensky, Vetluzhsky and Semyonovsky districts. To preserve the population, hunting estates carry out special measures — they create supplementary feeding sites and place stockpiles of grain and feed so that the animals can accumulate fat before hibernation.
