      The Ministry of Forestry of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has announced a campaign to collect New Year’s firs and pines for recycling. It will start on January 12 and run until the end of the month. This was reported by the press service of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Any resident of the Nizhny Novgorod Region can bring their tree if they purchased the fir from a forestry office under a purchase-and-sale agreement. To do this, you simply need to bring the agreement and go to the nearest forestry office — it does not matter where the tree was originally bought.

      The purpose of the campaign is to organize proper collection and disposal of New Year’s trees so that they do not end up in municipal solid waste landfills. Coniferous trees are considered plant waste that can be recycled in an environmentally beneficial way.

      Roman Vorobyov, Minister of Forestry and Protection of Wildlife Sites of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, reminded people that you cannot throw a tree into a regular trash container, since formally it is bulky waste. He noted that by turning in a New Year’s tree for recycling, residents help nature and allow the “New Year’s beauty” to be useful once again.

      Collection points for firs and pines are operating in all district forestry offices of the region. Addresses and phone numbers of these forestry offices are published on the official website of the Ministry of Forestry of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Collected trees will be disposed of in two ways. Some will be sent to the boiler houses of forestry offices and forest fire stations, where they will be burned in compliance with environmental standards. The rest will be processed into wood chips. These chips can later be used to produce mulch, compost, or other raw materials.

      The ministry clarified that 4,030 coniferous trees were harvested for the New Year holidays this season. Specialists emphasize the importance of responsible handling of the final stage of the “life cycle” of festive firs and pines and urge residents not to throw them into landfills.
