      In December in Nizhny Novgorod many people look for places to skate and take children to snowy slides. The difficulty is that the weather often changes: a thaw today, frost tomorrow, and outdoor venues can change their schedule or close within a day. So before heading out it’s better to quickly check current prices and opening hours on the official pages of rinks and parks or on their social media. Parents should discuss safety rules on the slides with their child in advance: most injuries occur not because of the height but because of haste and queues. Explain the simple things: go down one at a time, don’t stop across the slope, move aside immediately after a run, and tuck scarves and long laces inside the jacket. And one more thing: if it’s above freezing outside, it’s better to choose an indoor rink — the ice there is smoother and activities won’t be disrupted by rain or wet snow.

      Where to go and where to skate:

      Nizhny Novgorod Fair: usually an outdoor rink and a festive zone are opened here nearby; it’s convenient to get to, but in the evenings and on weekends the longest queues for entry and rental form. Park “Switzerland”: a family option — in addition to a rink there are often winter entertainments like tubing and small snowy slopes, plus lots of space for walking and the possibility to split up by interests (rink, slides, café). 1 May Park: suitable for a short outing after school or work — the park is compact, making it easier to meet and quickly get on the ice, but before going it’s worth checking the ice condition and session schedule. Nagorny Sports Palace and other indoor rinks/sports centers: a good choice during a thaw — the surface is more stable, the schedule is clearer, there are fewer cancellations, and beginners and children usually find it more comfortable to learn there.

      Where to find snowy slides (by location):

      Avtozavodsky Park: when temperatures are steadily below freezing the ice area operates daily — on weekdays 11:00–21:00, on weekends 10:00–21:00. Shchelokovsky Khutor: slides near the third lake. "Silikat": snowy slides on Silikat Lake, small slopes with packed runs. Sormovsky Park: there are slides for sleds, snow tubes and plastic sleds, plus other winter entertainments. Recreation base "Island of Adventures": a suburb of Nizhny Novgorod, a tubing track 150 meters long; the place is designed for family recreation and guest safety is monitored there.

      What to check before leaving (by points):

      Queues for rental and entry: at popular venues these take the most time. Availability of "penguins" for training: these are often in short supply, especially during peak hours. Changing rooms: on busy days they can be crowded, so it’s better to arrive with time to spare. Children’s equipment: it’s better to bring spare mittens so they can change after playing in the snow and on wet ice. Session time: if possible choose daytime weekdays — it’s usually calmer and cheaper.
