      Beware of sledding hills!

      So that a child's favorite pastime — sledding down a hill — brings only joy, certain safety rules must be observed.

      First of all, make sure the slope does not run out onto a roadway. Ideally, the hill should be on a separate area, away from roads.

      It is prohibited to tie sleds or inflatable tubes (or simply hold on by hand) to vehicles: kick sleds, snowmobiles, ATVs, cars. This is an extremely dangerous game and can lead to tragic consequences. Sleds or tubes can gain enormous speed from sudden acceleration, which can throw a child onto the roadway, or lead to a collision with an unexpected obstacle: a tree, a fence, or a pole. The consequences are injuries, broken limbs, and threats to life and health.

      Teenagers especially like to fool around like this. We remind you that the provisions of the law place an obligation on adults to supervise the actions of children and adolescents in public places, including streets, parks, squares, areas adjacent to residential buildings, including playgrounds and sports facilities.

      Transporting children as passengers in cars also requires special attention. After all, visibility on the roads worsens at this time of year, and roads become covered with ice.

      During winter driving, drivers should follow traffic rules, maintain distance between vehicles and limit speed so as to always be able to take all necessary measures in time for a full stop of the vehicle and to prevent an accident.

      The State Traffic Inspectorate recommends increasing the distance between nearby vehicles, avoiding sudden acceleration and braking.

      Remember that a child must always be buckled with a seat belt, and children under 12 must be in a restraint device (a child car seat).

      When driving a child to school or public places in the morning, do not let them out on roadways, including driveways. Choose a safe parking area and look around carefully before dropping off passengers.

      Organized trips

      Winter is the season of children's holiday events. Schoolchildren will be taken to New Year performances in organized groups.

      The regional State Traffic Inspectorate reminds drivers that they must always yield and let organized convoys pass. Joining such convoys is prohibited. According to Article 12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, crossing an organized vehicle or pedestrian convoy or taking a place in it is punishable by a fine.

      Therefore, the State Traffic Inspectorate asks motorists to be understanding about possible traffic jams and, if possible, to take detours around streets that the convoys will travel along.

      A bright outfit — the key to a child's safety

      Because the winter daylight hours are significantly shorter, road visibility is substantially reduced. For this reason, State Traffic Inspectorate officers advise dressing children in bright winter clothes with special elements called "reflectors." This way a child will be visible to passing drivers even in the dark.

      Too-bright sunlight is also dangerous. Combined with white snow it creates glare that blinds people. Also, snowbanks narrow the roadway. Therefore, children should be more careful when crossing the road.

      The safest place to walk is on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, a pedestrian should walk on the road shoulder facing oncoming traffic. Cross the street where there are marked crossing lines or signs; where these are absent — at intersections along the sidewalk line.
