In the settlement of Buturlino, a 76-year-old pensioner lost a large sum of money to fraudsters. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
The perpetrators used a scam that involved several stages. First, a man who introduced himself as an employee of the city communications service called the woman. He asked the pensioner to dictate her SNILS number. Then a call came from an alleged law enforcement representative. The interlocutor told the woman that she was suspected of financing an unfriendly country, and that to remove the suspicion she needed to declare all her savings.
In the final stage a man who introduced himself as a lawyer called. He convinced the pensioner that to resolve the problem she needed to hand over all her cash to an unknown courier. The woman followed all the fraudsters’ instructions and handed the courier 756,000 rubles.
A criminal case was opened under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud). The police remind that employees of government bodies, banks and other official organizations never require money to be handed over through couriers. Any demands to declare funds under the pretext of “security” are a scam.
Earlier it was reported that a taxi driver in Nizhny Novgorod prevented a scam against a 92-year-old pensioner. And in Dzerzhinsk a pensioner believed fake police officers and handed the con artists 5 million rubles.
