For many people, New Year's Eve is a time of joy, magic, and family warmth. However, for dogs this holiday can become a real ordeal. Loud fireworks, noise, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause severe stress in a pet. To make New Year's Eve more comfortable for your four-legged friend, experts from the Russian Cynological Federation have prepared several recommendations.
Reconnaissance
Start preparing in advance, for example on the morning or during the day of December 31. A walk will help tire the dog, but do not overexert it. It is important that it has time to rest before the evening. Also make sure your pet has all necessary identification: a microchip, a tattoo, or an ID tag on the collar. This will help find the dog quickly if it gets lost.
Safe place
Create a cozy place for the dog where it can hide from the noise. This can be a separate room or a corner under a table with a bed. Put its favorite toys and items with familiar scents there. This will help your pet feel safe.
Means of assistance
If your dog is afraid of loud sounds, buy special earplugs or calming treats in advance. You can also use white noise — play calm music or nature sounds. On a veterinarian's recommendation, pheromones can be used to help the dog relax.
Preparing for guests
Warn your guests in advance about how to behave with the dog. Explain that it may be skittish and doesn't like being touched without permission. Also do not allow feeding the pet from the table — many human foods can be dangerous for it.
"The X Hour"
After night falls, it's better to stop walks, since outside the dog may be frightened by the fireworks and run away. During fireworks, try to remain calm and not show fear. Give the pet the opportunity to hide in its shelter. Do not scold it for being anxious, but do not ignore it either. If the dog comes to you for support, pet and praise it. Distract it with treats and toys — this will help it cope with the stress.
