An exhibition about Nizhny Novgorod has opened at the Russian Museum of Photography.
The Russian Museum of Photography hosted the opening of the exhibition "Nizhny through the Lens: History in Photographs." The exhibition features around 150 photographs from the collections of the Russian Museum of Photography, the State Historical Museum, the A. M. Gorky State Museum and private collections. The exhibition is being held with the support of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
"Archival photography in a museum is non-circulating, rare and authentic. The exhibition that opened at the Russian Museum of Photography is exactly about that. It is devoted to our Nizhny, inseparably connected with the history of Russian photography, and it opens the first part of the large project 'Nizhny Guide', conceived as a cycle of exhibitions about the city. The special value of the exhibition is formed by authentic albumen prints, among which is a work by Andrey Karelin from the 1870s depicting the lost St. George’s Church on the Upper Volga Embankment," noted Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Oleg Berkovich.
How Nizhny Novgorod changed over the pre-revolutionary decades is told by more than 150 photographs made in the 1870s–1910s by Maxim Dmitriev, Andrey Karelin, Petr Neysky, Vasily Zeveke, Mikhail Khripkov and other authors.
"For us, a very important event is the donation to the museum of albumen prints. Part of these works can already be seen in the exhibition now, and a more complete exhibition we plan to hold at the museum next year. Currently the exhibition features rare shots of the city that tell of winter amusements and how people spent their time. We assembled from our collections albumen and gelatin photographs, as well as stereopairs — one of the favorite entertainments of people in the 19th century. They show scenes from different corners of the world, and we are exhibiting them for the first time as part of our exhibition," said Ksenia Fedoseeva-Tsaritsynskaya, director of the Russian Museum of Photography.
Also included in the exhibition are rare original positives and phototype postcards provided by Nizhny Novgorod collector and local historian Anton Martsev.
The exhibition project "Nizhny through the Lens: History in Photographs" is an example of inter-museum cooperation. Among the rare exhibits on display are a portrait of little Rafail Karelin, son of photographer Andrey Karelin, by the New Year tree, provided by the State Historical Museum, as well as a photograph of Maxim Gorky among participants of the 1904 "Gorky Christmas Tree" from the A. M. Gorky State Museum.
The exhibition "Nizhny through the Lens: History in Photographs" can be visited until March 8, 2026. Tickets can also be purchased with the "Pushkin Card."
Recall that in 2026 the bank-operator servicing the "Pushkin Card" will change in all regions of Russia — it will be VTB Bank. Program participants must submit an application to reissue the card by December 28, 2025. The "Pushkin Card" program was launched by the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin in September 2021. Young people aged 14 to 22 can participate in it. A detailed schedule of events is available on the Kultura.rf portal. To date, the number of "Pushkin Card" users exceeds 12 million people. Since 2025 the program has been part of the national "Family" project.
Various cultural events and activities in the Nizhny Novgorod Region can be found on the Kultura.RF portal.
