For the first time in the Nizhny Novgorod region, large-scale training on HIV prevention was held for beauty industry professionals. More than a hundred beauty specialists, from manicurists to cosmetologists, attended a series of seminars to understand how HIV is actually transmitted and to learn to work without fear and prejudice. This was reported by Elena Tarasova, director of the ANO "Savada", during a press conference on the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1.
The initiative was prompted by a high-profile 2024 case in which a Pskov resident allegedly contracted HIV after a manicure. The situation sparked a wave of concern: some clients began refusing services, and technicians became afraid to work.
Even in the most advanced salons there turned out to be many myths and misunderstandings. Some were convinced that HIV is transmitted by a mosquito bite, others believed that a simple touch is enough.
As a result, the organizers held 10 training sessions. More than 100 specialists attended. Lectures were given not only by activists and representatives of public organizations, but also by a doctor from the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for AIDS Control. He explained in detail how the virus is transmitted, how to protect yourself and why there is no need to fear people living with HIV.
Special attention was paid to combating myths and fears. Participants were told how to provide cosmetology and beauty services safely and to a high standard while observing sanitary norms and clients' rights.
It was previously reported that the incidence of HIV infection is declining in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
