A trichologist told Nizhny Novgorod residents how to properly blow-dry their hair in winter.

      29 November 2025 12:16 Society The hot air from a hair dryer can seriously damage hair in cold weather, especially when used frequently at the highest setting. However, with the right approach a hair dryer can do more good than harm. This was said by Nizhny Novgorod trichologist Tatyana Varenova in a conversation with the editor-in-chief of the publication "Stacionar-press", Alexey Nikonov.

      According to the specialist, intense heat overdrys hair, making it brittle and weakened. However, with the right approach a hair dryer can even protect hair from the negative effects of the environment.

      "I advise choosing a medium setting and holding the hair dryer no closer than 15 centimeters from the hair — that way you dry gently, without overheating. Drying will take a little longer, but you'll preserve the health of your hair," Varenova noted.

      Before drying in winter, the doctor recommends using protective masks, balms and conditioners. The trichologist calls leave-in heat protection mandatory before using a hair dryer — it helps preserve the hair's structure.

      She added that despite common belief, air-drying during the heating season can be more harmful. With high indoor temperatures and dry air, hair loses moisture and becomes overly dry. Varenova also advises limiting the use of curling irons and straighteners in winter — high temperatures during this period are especially damaging to hair.
