World AIDS Day is observed on December 1.

      The slogan "Overcoming challenges, transforming AIDS responses," chosen in 2025 for World AIDS Day campaigns, most accurately reflects the current challenges and opportunities in the fight against HIV/AIDS and reminds us that former methods no longer always work in new conditions and require rethinking.

      The global goal of the fight against AIDS is the complete eradication of HIV infection and the end of the AIDS pandemic, as well as improving the quality of life of all people affected by the disease through preventing new infections, providing quality treatment and support, eliminating discrimination and stigma, and developing sustainable prevention measures and research.

      A great deal is being done in Russia to achieve this: from running information campaigns explaining where and how to take a free HIV test and what to do if the result is positive, to free treatment for HIV infection.

      As of 25.11.2025, 18,697 people with HIV infection are under medical supervision in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, of whom 17,772 people are receiving treatment, including 234 children under 18. Sexual transmission predominates (82.5% of cases). We remind you that the main routes of HIV transmission are sexual contact, use of psychoactive substances, and mother-to-child transmission.

      The law of the Russian Federation guarantees medical care to people living with HIV. Any medically indicated care for people living with HIV is provided on the same basis as for other patients. People living with HIV enjoy all the rights provided by the legislation of the Russian Federation in the field of public health. In addition, the law provides for treatment of HIV infection: specialized antiretroviral therapy (ART) is provided free of charge by the state.

      All citizens of the Russian Federation have the right to take an HIV test FREE OF CHARGE at any state healthcare institution at their place of residence or at Centers for the Prevention and Control of AIDS.
