      A gang that stole payments intended for participants of the special military operation was detained in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

      The criminal group included eight Nizhny Novgorod residents. In 2024–2025 they sought out people leading an antisocial lifestyle and abusing alcohol, and then induced them to sign contracts with the Ministry of Defense. Female members of the organized crime group then entered into sham marriages with the recruits and gained access to their bank accounts. According to the investigation, the defendants appropriated more than 4 million rubles in payments due to servicemen.

      In addition, investigators believe that in August 2024 one of the suspects persuaded his acquaintance to sell his share in an apartment; the criminal kept the proceeds of the deal for himself. Then, before being sent to the special military operation, the man was convinced to enter into a sham marriage with one of the fraudsters’ female accomplices. Fearing exposure, the suspect gave the serviceman and four of his friends methanol to drink, after which they died.

      Criminal cases have been opened. The suspects are charged with fraud on an especially large scale, and one of them is charged with the murder of two or more persons. The court imposed measures of restraint in the form of detention and house arrest.
