In Nizhny Novgorod, a 78-year-old woman fell victim to a fraud scheme, losing gold bars worth more than 5 million rubles. This was reported by the regional Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to the victim, unknown callers phoned her regularly for two weeks. They posed as employees of various organizations — from the pension fund to banks and law enforcement agencies. The perpetrators acted confidently and convincingly, claiming that a suspicious financial transaction had allegedly been registered in the woman’s name.
Under pressure from the fraudsters, the pensioner withdrew her savings from a bank deposit and purchased four gold bars totaling 470 grams at a bank branch. Following the fraudsters’ instructions, she got into a taxi and went to the Bogorodsky District. On one of the dirt roads, the woman handed the precious metal to an unknown man.
Only later did she realize she had been deceived and contacted the police. A criminal case has been opened on charges of fraud on an especially large scale. Law enforcement officers continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
Earlier it was reported that the fraudsters had been posing as employees of the Nizhny Novgorod Ministry of Property.
