A resident of Nizhny Novgorod received a long prison term for an explosion that occurred in an apartment building on Fuchik Street in the spring of 2024. This was reported by the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

The evidence collected was deemed sufficient by the court to deliver a guilty verdict. The man was found guilty of illegal acquisition, possession and transportation of firearms and ammunition (part 1 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), illegal acquisition, possession and transportation of explosive substances and explosive devices (part 1 of Article 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), as well as illegal handling of ammunition for large-caliber weapons (part 1 of Article 222.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). In addition, he was found guilty of damaging another person’s property on a large scale through negligence when handling sources of increased danger (Article 168 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

The investigation established that the convicted man illegally acquired and stored an explosive device in his apartment on Fuchik Street. In March 2024, careless handling of explosive materials in the apartment led to an explosion and a subsequent fire. The explosion damaged load-bearing structures between the 4th and 5th floors, which resulted in two entrances of the apartment building being declared unsafe.

The defendant’s actions caused large-scale damage to the owners of apartments in those entrances — in the amount of 341.3 million rubles. During a search, authorities seized firearms, ammunition and explosive devices from the man.

By court decision, the man was sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment in a general-regime penal colony and fined 30,000 rubles.

Recall that eight people, including three children, sought medical assistance after the explosion. The person responsible was also hospitalized.

As a result of the incident, the building sustained substantial damage. Some residents were forced to move into rental apartments. Emergency repair work on the first entrance was completed by September 2024. The state of emergency at the apartment building was lifted in December. After that, residents began returning to their apartments.
