There used to be an abandoned lot near building No. 54 on Kosmicheskaya Street in the Avtozavodsky District, but thanks to the support of social community officers this area has been transformed into a cozy square. The public space has become popular not only with children and adults, but also with pet owners, as an enclosed area for dog walking and training was created nearby.
The project was made possible thanks to the participation of city residents in the federal "Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment" program. Social community officers helped organize the collection of signatures — more than five thousand people voted for the project.
The square is located in a busy part of the district. Nearby are apartment buildings, two schools, two kindergartens, a sports school and the city hospital. According to local resident Natalia Sintsova, the site was previously a marshy area where reeds even grew. When a social community officer came to her home to conduct a survey, she, as a mother with children, gladly supported the idea of creating a well‑equipped recreational area.
Another local resident, Serafima Barmina, admits that there used to be mud and a dump here, and now it’s a great place for walks.
"My child only comes here. It’s sports, fresh air, and safe recreation. Children come here from all along Kosmicheskaya and Monchegorskaya streets," she said.
According to social community officer Tatyana Khramtsova, residents, together with the administration of the Avtozavodsky District, worked on the future square project and discussed it at public meetings. The head of the Avtozavodsky District, Alexander Nagin, noted that the designers tried to take all residents’ wishes into account. Thus, the square now features pedestrian paths, a pump track, a sports area for basketball and tennis, a children's playground, benches and pergolas. About 100 new light fixtures were installed, and trees and shrubs were planted.
"Now every Avtozavod resident can come here to exercise, walk with their children, or simply relax. Residents are very grateful for this space," shared Tatyana Khramtsova.
Social community officer Valentina Mironova added that the dog area, which was also created at activists’ request, is very popular with residents. There are plans to install lighting there.
"Here you can simply walk with your pet, or train with it," she said.
Work on the square was completed in summer 2024. Last year, a total of 29 public spaces were renovated in Nizhny Novgorod under the "Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment" program. Most of them are located in the Avtozavodsky District, one of the most densely populated in the city.
From 2018 to 2024, 718 public areas and 3,400 courtyards were improved in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Since 2025 the program has been implemented as part of the national project "Infrastructure for Life," aimed at developing high-quality urban environments across the country.
