A resident of the Nizhny Novgorod region will have to pay compensation for moral damage after her dog attacked a passerby. This decision was made on October 23, 2025 by the Krasnobakovsky Interdistrict Court, the joint press service of the courts of general jurisdiction of the region reported.

According to the case materials, the incident occurred on December 30, 2024 near the village of Chernyshikha. Maksim R. was walking a shepherd dog belonging to Anna S. without a leash or muzzle. At some point the dog attacked Natalya K., who was passing by, and bit her.

The injured party went to court demanding that the owner of the animal and Maksim R. pay 30,000 rubles as compensation for moral damage and also reimburse postal expenses.

During the court hearing the defendants did not deny the fact of the attack itself, but considered the amount claimed to be excessive.

The court concluded that the attack was made possible by the owner’s failure to properly control the dog. The animal moved freely along the street without supervision, which led to the attack. As a result, the plaintiff sustained bodily injuries and suffered emotional distress.

At the end of the proceedings the court partially granted the claim: Anna S. was ordered to pay 30,000 rubles in compensation, as well as postal costs and the state fee. The court denied the claims against Maksim R.

The decision has not yet come into force.

It was previously reported that a woman from Nizhny Novgorod who set her Alabai on a neighbor was sentenced to 7 years in a penal colony.

Additionally, since 2023 it has been prohibited in Russia to let dogs and cats roam unsupervised. And since last November fines were introduced for walking dogs without a muzzle.
