      The “Sport in Every Yard” project, initiated by the head of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, was named among the winners of the regional stage of the International #WEARETOGETHER Award 2025. Recall that the project enables Nizhny Novgorod residents in all districts of the city to take part in free physical culture and sports classes led by specialist coaches and experienced instructors.

      As the city Department of Physical Culture and Sports reported, a total of 490 applications were submitted for the regional stage of the award. Following the competitive selection, 24 winners were announced across nine categories. The “Sport in Every Yard” project won in the “NGOs and Projects” track, in the “Code of Mercy” nomination.

      “The ‘Sport in Every Yard’ project is not just an initiative but a true platform for bringing people together through sport. Its uniqueness lies in opening the doors to an active lifestyle for all groups of citizens, regardless of age and level of fitness. Our goal is to involve as many Nizhny Novgorod residents as possible in regular physical culture and sport. Victory at the regional stage of the International #WEARETOGETHER Award is only the beginning! The ‘Sport in Every Yard’ project has every chance of further success in the final!” emphasized the department’s specialists.

      The municipal center for sports facilities and GTO, which implements the project, reminded that the program offers classes in various directions with the participation of professional instructors.

      “These include Nordic walking, general physical training, team sports, preparation for taking the GTO fitness tests, as well as ice skating and rollerblading, skipping rope, yoga and other types of physical activity. All these free classes are conducted by professional instructors at more than 40 courtyard sports grounds in Nizhny Novgorod, including parks and squares. In 2024, more than 19,000 Nizhny Novgorod residents took part in the project,” the institution noted.

      According to the organizers, the award results will be announced in Moscow as part of the International Forum of Civic Participation #WEARETOGETHER on Volunteer Day, December 5.

      Recall that, according to Yuri Shalabaev, the city has created conditions so that sport is not just leisure but part of a healthy lifestyle system that covers all age and social groups. He reported this at the first meeting of the City Duma of the I convocation, presenting his report on the results of his work as mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, as well as his strategic vision for the development of Nizhny Novgorod in key areas.

      “For many Nizhny Novgorod residents, physical culture and sport are indeed becoming a way of life. Now nearly 60% of the city’s residents are such participants. In recent years this figure has increased by 17 percentage points,” added Yuri Shalabaev.

      He also stated that health care, disease prevention, a focus on a healthy lifestyle and engagement in sport will be among the main priorities in the near future.

      Earlier it was reported that sports schools in Nizhny Novgorod are undergoing major repairs and sports grounds are being modernized. Head of Nizhny Novgorod Yuri Shalabaev reported this on his social networks. The mayor stressed that sport is a priority in Nizhny Novgorod.

      The International #WEARETOGETHER Award was established in 2020 with the support of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and is now the country’s largest civic initiative. Its goal is to support volunteering, mentoring, social entrepreneurship, NGOs, regions and municipalities implementing systemic programs for the development of volunteerism, as well as socially responsible businesses whose work is aimed at achieving national development goals and solving significant social problems.
