The governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin, and the head of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum, Kristina Trubinova, signed a cooperation agreement. New projects from the country’s main theatre museum will now appear in the region.
The signing took place at the renovated Center for Theatre History in Moscow. The parties agreed to jointly develop cultural and educational programs and to create museum spaces. One of the first steps will be the opening in 2026 of a museum of the Nizhny Novgorod State Puppet Theatre.
The new museum will be a modern space that tells the nearly century-long history of the theatre since 1929. The exhibition will feature rare posters, archival documents, photographs, sketches and other materials from the collections of the theatre and the Bakhrushin Museum.
Gleb Nikitin emphasized that the region’s theatrical life has changed significantly in recent years.
“Over the past few years, Nizhny Novgorod theatres have made a very large leap forward. As part of federal projects and regional funding, we have carried out important repair work for the theatres and updated equipment. This gives us additional opportunities to reach new creative heights — to work with guest directors, to explore non-standard formats, to receive landmark awards. The Bakhrushin Museum is the country’s main theatre museum, and our partnership will become another step both in the development of the museum direction and in the development of the theatres,” the head of the region said.
The puppet theatre museum will become part of the federal program “New Museum of Theatre,” which Kristina Trubinova launched in 2023 with the support of the Russian Ministry of Culture. The idea of the project is to create museum spaces at active theatres across the country in order to preserve theatrical heritage and make it accessible to the general public.
Earlier it was reported that the opening of a branch of the Russian Museum on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin has been postponed indefinitely.
