
The main causes of death in the Nizhny Novgorod Region have been identified.
October 18, 2025 17:16 Society The Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region published statistics on causes of death in the region for 2023. The data indicate that the main factors of mortality remain cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diseases related to alcohol consumption.
Overall mortality, including both natural and external causes, amounted to 1,457.5 cases per 100,000 people. This is 92 cases fewer than in 2022 and 531 fewer compared to 2021.
At the top of the list of causes of death are diseases of the circulatory system — 793.4 cases per 100,000 population. That is almost every second death in the region. Cancer ranks second with a rate of 184 per 100,000 people.
Diseases of the nervous system are third, with 134 cases per 100,000. Next are diseases of the digestive organs, which claimed 104.8 lives per 100,000 people. The most dangerous in this group were pathologies of the liver and pancreas, including those caused by alcohol abuse.
Mortality from diseases of the respiratory system amounted to 51.8 cases per 100,000 population. Endocrine pathologies, including diabetes mellitus and eating disorders, caused 26.3 deaths per 100,000. Diseases of the genitourinary system claimed 17 lives per 100,000, and mental disorders — 11 per 100,000.
Deaths related to alcohol form a separate category. In 2023 this indicator reached 259 cases per 100,000 people. Of these, 117 were related to cirrhosis, hepatitis and liver fibrosis, 95 to alcoholic cardiomyopathy, 17 to degeneration of the nervous system. Also recorded were 22 cases of fatal alcohol poisoning.
Among external causes of death, cases related to drugs stand out. Accidental poisoning by narcotic substances amounted to 0.6 cases per 100,000, and poisonings with undetermined intent — 2.2.
Traffic accidents resulted in 11.7 deaths per 100,000 population. Falls and accidental drownings caused 2.9 deaths per 100,000, homicides 2.1, and deaths from fires and smoke inhalation 0.8.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Health published a list of medical services that will become free for citizens in 2026.
